A native of South Texas, this plant thrives in dry, hot, harsh sun conditions. If you have a steep slope in the yard facing West, where water runs off and harsh afternoon sun baking the grass that struggles to survive, plant Zexmenia there on that slope. It thrives on less water, and the more sun the better. Let it grow to 3 feet tall, or trim it for a lower 12" groundcover. A single plant can take up 10 square feet, so it is a highly cost-effective plant to fill in dry, hot, full sun areas. It's also a host for the Bordered Patch butterfly, making sure you have lots of adult butterflies visiting your garden. Learn more at Native Plant Society and Master Gardeners and Nativo Gardens.
