Blooming for 90 days in late summer, Texas Star Hibiscus is native to Houston but grows well in North Texas so long as it has moist soil.  Its native habitat is marshy, swampy soil in full sun or morning sun. It will die back to the roots after frost, so trim back last year’s growth in winter for fresh shoots to emerge in spring. Besides its bright red blooms reaching up to 7 feet in height, another reason to plant it in your garden is to attract butterflies and moths. It’s a host plant for butterflies including the Gray Hairstreak, Painted Lady, Common Checkered Skipper and Tropical Checkered Skipper....as well as the impressive Io Moth! It’s a wonderful accent plant for a garden site with a low area where water pools. Learn more at Native Plant Society and Native Gardeners.
