White, sphere-shaped blooms (of up to 4000 individual flowers) attract a wide variety of butterflies, bees, moths, beetles, and other pollinators. Blooms sit on tall, 6-foot, multi-branched stems emerging from a base of yucca-like leaves. Its large taproot means you should plant it where you intend it to stay....no moving it later!
A member of the carrot family (Apiaceae), it serves as a native host plant of the Eastern Black Swallowtail. Having one of these means you won't need to replant dill, fennel, or parsley in the butterfly garden as host plants (although it doesn't hurt to plant those too). Over 100 types of pollinating insects rely on this prairie native. It looks great planted alongside Gayfeather, Coneflower, and Black Eyed Susans for a prairie aesthetic.
