Loved by birds for its bright red berries, Pigeonberry is well suited to moist shady areas beneath trees. At only 12-18" tall, it's a bit taller than a true groundcover, thought it can be used as one. It provides valuable habitat for insects that scurry along mulch or the soil surface, protecting them from sunlight (and birds) with the shade and protection of its glossy dark green leaves. Start with a few plants and over time it will cast seed and fill in for a mass planting. Do not eat the leaves or seeds as they are toxic to humans (though not for birds!).
