A stunning salvia with fuzzy leaves and purple and white flowers, it's native to South Texas and also called Velvet Sage. To grow it here in North Texas, after the fall frost kills the top growth, be sure and mulch the roots well over winter, to keep them warm. When planting, if in heavy clay, add crushed granite to help improve drainage to better mimic its natural environment. Avoid planting it where water sits over winter (to avoid root rot). Only returns in spring in North Texas when properly cared for. A stunning plant when well cared for in the garden! Learn more at Native Gardeners and Master Gardeners.
