Also called Big Blue, a highly drought tolerant salvia with 12-15” long blooms, Indigo Spires is a favorite for bumblebees. It’s a hybrid of two different species (S. longispicata x S. farinacea) discovered at Huntington Botanical Gardens in 1979.
A very large plant that thrives in clay soil and hot weather, you’ll want to trim the spent blooms to extend flowering time, from March to November. After first frost, trim it back to the ground and in early spring when it returns you can tip prune to create a bushier, sturdier plant with more bloom spikes. Learn more at Master Gardeners.
