For an area in full sun or afternoon sun, Cross Vine offers trumpet-shaped flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Growing on a woody vine with semi-evergreen leaves, it can attach to an arbor with its tendrils, or a brick wall with the disks at the tendril's tips. It blooms on stems from last year's growth, so be sure to only trim it back after blooming has finished (around July 1), leaving plenty of older stems to bloom next year. For a school garden, it's a great, affordable native plant because it will send up root suckers that can be dug and relocated to cover an entire fence with blooms that hummingbirds cannot resist.
