Native to Mexico and the Southwestern US and highly drought tolerant (a Texas SmartScape recommended plant), it blooms bright yellow in fall. If planting in clay, give the planting hole a scoop of crushed granite and plant it in an elevated mound to avoid water pooling overwinter.
Also called Mexican Bush Marigold, it’s a great plant for a sensory garden; it’s leaves share the same intense fragrance of cempasúchil (the common marigold), used to decorate ofrendas for Dia de (los) Muertos around the time of the fall Monarch migration. In the spring, tip pruning the plant will give it a bushier appearance. Learn more at Master Gardeners and Nativo Gardens.
