A Texas SuperStar plant (selected in 2025 by A&M AgriLife), Beautyberry thrives in almost any conditions. It thrives in full sun long as the soil is moist. A little afternoon shade (by 3pm) is best. It can also be planted in part shade (it’s natural habitat as an understory shrub) where drier soil is not a problem.

Magenta purple berries are loved by birds, who will help scatter the seeds to spread the plant. In fall, the foliage turns yellow. Leaves contain Callicarpenal, a terpenoid, proven effective to deter mosquitoes. Used for that purpose by native peoples for over 300 years to
repel mosquitos and other insect pests. Learn more at Native Plant Society and Nativo Gardens.
