Our native fern in North Texas, the Wood Fern loves moist shade. Plant it around the base of a tree if you can't get grass to grow. Over time, it will spread and fill in with rhizomes. Leaves are quite dark green, sometimes lime, and they turn bronze in fall and winter. Trim back fern fronds before spring, for new growth to emerge. As it loves moisture, in summer be sure to give it a bit of extra water. Learn more at Native Plant Society and Nativo Gardens.
