A prolific DFW native with lavender-blue blooms, it grows exceptionally well in heavy clay with strong rhizomes that produce additional plants nearby that can be dug and relocated. After it blooms, cut it back by 50% 2 or 3 times during the season for a fresh wave of flowers. It can tolerate dry conditions but it does benefit from periodic flooding. Great for lower areas in the garden that collect water after rain. It can get floppy, so don’t put it near walkways but instead in the middle of a garden bed where neighboring plants can help support its slender stems.

Did you know? The Queen butterfly (a close relative of the Monarch) relies on biochemicals in the bloom’s nectar to produce pheromones. The plant and insect both aid the other in their dance of life. Fireflies are also a common visitor, hiding amidst the plant stems and helping pollinate the blue-lavender blooms, from spring through fall. A favorite of the Monarch during its fall migration to its overwinter habitat in Mexico. L
