A native vine (common in East Texas) that is a beautiful alternative to Japanese honeysuckle (which is highly invasive). Flowers attract hummingbirds, and berries attract birds. Slender vines are great for an arbor, trellis, or brick wall…or even as a vining groundcover. The leaves help to feed the young of the Spring Azure butterfly and the Snowberry Clearwing Moth. The vines may attract aphids in spring, but if you have White Yarrow planted nearby they will support lacewings to keep these aphids in check organically. A great plant for a school garden, to show children how to take stem cuttings and easily propagate new plants. Learn more at Native Plant Society and Nativo Gardens.
